Great lecture. I was especially moved because I came across this piece shortly after my own breakup and it really spoke to me during that time. It was the sound of my grief. I had no idea until now that it was written in a similar moment of Chopin's life. What a masterpiece.

So much good advice. How come I cannot thumbs up this video 5 times? I want to! I have heard some of it before from elsewhere naturally, but repeating correct advice (maybe said differently) makes me more likely to learn it! (yes I am a little obstinate). Here's a mistake I make (made), though. Practising slowly 2 or 4 bars, finding the most logical and comfortable fingering for my hands; then later on finding that fingering doesn't work when I play fast. So for me, while I shouldn't practise fast until it works slowly, I reckon I have to have a little go at fast (even if just for two or three notes - jumps for example) just to check which fingering works at tempo, then slow back down.

Dear Greg, Did Chopin at this young age deliberatly add 4 Appoggiatura to this score? Or were they added later? Tonny

Niektóre opracowania zawierają dodatkowe nuty w prawej ręce albo zakładają troszkę inny przebieg akompaniamentu. W mojej ocenie podkreśla to tylko wyjątkowość i otwarcie pola do interpretacji tegoż dzieła.

FYI: In the very first published edition of this piece the doppio movimento section does not have a diynamic marking! The pp was added by later publishers.

That ultra slow tempo made me grimace. Glad you couldn't stand it too!! I know the culprit, he also played Debussy's Rêverie at an excrutiatingly slow tempo totally ignoring the direction "sans lenteur". He might be famous, but his performances are not always my cup of tea... I am just starting to learn this lovely piece! (so starting in the middle where it is hard as usual!!). I look forward to checking out your playing guide! BTW I loved your one handed playing at 13:00. Really lovely!

Funny that this is one of my favourite etudes, if not the favourite! Though it might be because I don't play pieces of this level since I've only been learning piano with a teacher for 1 year. I like listening to this etude. It is very lively, like one of the names it's been given, and with your analysis it helps to understand the piece to appereciate it more!

The coda is truly disturbing with its tritones and falling chromatism. It could be the perfect soundtrack to a Jewish massacre in an eerie Polish forest during World War II. Chopin's sound world is very often dark and deeply mournful.
